Essential Tips For Learning To Drive
Direct Ireland Limited is regulated by the Central Bank of Ireland. A private company limited by shares. Registered in Ireland No. 374895. Registration Office One Park Place, Hatch Street, Dublin 2. Welcome to Ireland! If you want to drive while here, you will need a valid licence. But can you get car insurance with a foreign driving licence?
Yes. In Ireland, you can drive on our roads if you have a license from an EU or EEA member state. Otherwise, you can change your license to Irish.
As long as you obey the laws of the road and are a polite and responsible driver, you are welcome to drive in Ireland.
Third party car insurance is the highest legal level of cover required to drive in Ireland. It covers you if you damage or injure other people’s property while driving. It will also cover your passengers.
How Penalty Points Affect Your Car Insurance
Third party car insurance basically covers everyone except yourself. It will help the cost of repairing the damage and reduce the impact of the injury.
All drivers on the road have at least – or should have – third party cover. If they don’t, they are committing a crime.
Buying third party car insurance is only suitable for drivers who can pay for their own car repairs without making a claim on their insurance. The insurance claim will take care of the other party, but you will have to pay for any damage to the car or any expenses caused by your own personal injuries.
For added peace of mind, it is best to get third party, fire and theft cover, or comprehensive car insurance. These will cover more risks and help you feel safer on the road.
Are Old Style Paper Driving Licences Still Valid?
Yes. If you have a driving license issued by an EU or EEA member state you can drive in Ireland as long as your current license is valid and you have the appropriate insurance.
If you are in Ireland and have a UK driving licence, your license will no longer be recognized in Ireland. You should exchange your license for an Irish license as soon as possible. You cannot exchange a UK license if it has expired for more than a year. You will continue to receive licenses during the exchange process. NDLS (National Driving Licensing Service) will give you a receipt to confirm that you are exchanging your licence.
You can exchange a foreign driving license issued by an EU Member State or EU Member States of the EEA (Norway, Liechtenstein and Ireland) for an Irish driving licence. It costs €55 to do so, but the eye exams or medical tests are free.
If your driver’s license was issued by a country that does not recognize your driving license, you cannot exchange your license for an Irish one and you must start from scratch and take your theory test to get a learner’s license. However, if this happens, you only need to take 6 required driving training lessons instead of the usual 12.
International Driving License Ireland
You can apply to exchange your license online or in person at the National Driving License Service Center (NDLS).
If you lose your license, or it has expired, you will need a letter of authority from the state licensing agency that issued your license, and it must be properly translated into English by a certified service.
When that happens, it’s vital that you check your insurance somewhere before you hit the road. As long as you only have a valid third party, you will be safe and legally allowed to drive.

In short: it is the law. To drive in Ireland, you must have insurance. Driving without insurance is a criminal offence, and can result in 5 penalty points and a fine of up to €5,000. It could lead to disqualification or even 6 months in prison.
As required by law, car insurance means that if you have a road accident, you will not have to pay for all the damage to the driver’s vehicle yourself. Depending on the policy, you may be covered for damage to your own car, and/or your car being stolen or set on fire.
Generally, in the event of an accident, the at-fault insurer covers the driver’s car. You can find more information about claims after an incident here.
If you are driving someone else’s car, you must be a “designated driver” on their policy. Therefore, if you are learning, and using your parents’ or partner’s car to act with your sponsor, you must ensure that you are covered by their policy.

If you are the owner and main driver, you will need to issue your own policy. Insurance prices can vary by car type, so it’s a good idea to get a few insurance quotes before buying your first car to make sure you don’t have any nasty surprises after the sale. Don’t entice someone else to be the primary driver while you are the designated driver to try and get a cheaper premium. That’s an offense called “face” and can see your policy canceled or even accused of insurance fraud.
Some insurance policies include “open driving”, meaning that anyone with a full license can drive your car
